5. Preparation Of Plan Elevation and Section of A Residential Building

Problem Statement: You are required to prepare a complete set of submission and working drawings for a single-storey load-bearing Residential Building (1BHK) or a G+1 Framed Structure Residential Building (2BHK) with a flat roof and an internal staircase.

Using standard building principles and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conventions, draft the architectural details adhering to the following design specifications:

Part A: Design Specifications & Standard Dimensions Before drafting, assume and incorporate the following standard dimensions into your design:

  • Plinth Height: 0.60 m to 0.75 m above ground level.
  • Ceiling Height: 3.0 m to 3.5 m.
  • Wall Thickness: Assume 300 mm for load-bearing external walls or 200 mm for framed structure walls.
  • Staircase Dimensions: Provide a riser of 175 mm – 185 mm and a tread of 250 mm – 300 mm. Ensure a minimum headroom of 3.0 m.
  • Doors & Windows: Standard door height should be 2.1 m. Windowsill height should be 0.60 m for regular rooms and 1.20 m for the W.C. and Bath.
  • Damp Proof Course (DPC): 20 mm thick cement concrete (1:1.5:3) mixed with waterproofing compound.

Part B: Drawing Requirements (Deliverables) Using a standard drawing sheet (A1), accurately prepare the following deliverables:

  1. Developed Plan: Draw the detailed floor plan showing all room arrangements, wall thicknesses, and door/window locations. (Scale 1:100).
  2. Elevation: Draw the front architectural elevation showing the total building height, chajja projections, step levels, and roof parapet. (Scale 1:100).
  3. Vertical Section: Draw a section line across your plan that passes through critical structural areas, specifically the staircase or the W.C. and Bath. Show vertical details from the foundation bed to the roof terrace. (Scale 1:100).
  4. Foundation Plan: Draw the layout of the foundation excavation trenches (for load-bearing) or isolated column footings (for framed structure). (Scale 1:100 or 1:50).
  5. Site Plan: Draw the site plan showing the building footprint, plot boundaries, setback distances, and the main approach road. (Scale 1:200).

Part C: Schedules and Statements Include the following text-based tables and notes alongside your drawings:

  1. Schedule of Openings: Create a table listing the type (D1, W1, V1), sizes, masonry opening dimensions, and material specifications for every door, window, and ventilator.
  2. Area Statement: Calculate and present the total plot area, the built-up area, and the dimensions of individual rooms.
  3. Construction Notes: Provide brief specifications detailing the materials and mix ratios for the foundation, superstructure, roofing (e.g., R.C.C slab), flooring (e.g., terrazzo), and wall finishes.

Optional/Advanced Task: Re-create the above submission drawing set using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, applying appropriate layers, hatching for materials (like brickwork and concrete), and standard line thicknesses (e.g., visible outlines at 0.6mm, center lines at 0.2mm). Enclose the printed CAD layout.
